Launch: Thursday 12th January, 18:00 - 20:00
Opening Times: 10:30 - 16:30

About the exhibition:

Torbay artist Sam Regan will be exhibiting his series ‘Torquay Paintings’ in the Artizan Main Exhibition Space as part of the Artizan Gallery 2017 Solo Series, a collection of exhibitions promoting the bodies of work of individual Devon artists. There are still spaces available to exhibit as part of the January portion of the series in the Artizan Rear Gallery and the newly opened Torbay Gallery.

Private View:

Join us on Thursday 12th January for the official evening launch of the exhibition and the larger 2017 Solo Series. We welcome you to explore the works of Sam Regan and the other exhibiting artists across the three spaces featured at Artizan Gallery and Torbay Gallery, as well as take advantage of exclusive evening discounts. A complimentary glass of wine will be made available to all guests on arrival and full bar services will operate from Artizan Gallery during the evening.

We would also invite any artists interested in a 2017/2018 exhibition to come and view the spaces and discuss availability.

Artist Statement:

“Painting is a lot like fishing. Stick your brush in the water and wait. Hope for something big (or at least funny looking…) Read the paper. Eat a sandwich. Think about painting. Call Baselitz (no answer.) Read “Hunger”. Crossword Puzzle. Whistle. Paint. Curse God. Go home.” Joe Bradley

This body of work continues to be an embodiment of my place in time and where I find myself in this particular moment.

My paintings are a series of non-representational spaces and objects that echo a familiar environment but are not easy to pin down. They are created through fortuitous events caused by rupture and displacement of the surface, but are controlled by the decisive shapes, forms and brush marks I apply.

I want to evoke the physical presence in the painting, the engagement and freedom I have with the paint and the intuitive and visceral marking of the surface. It is through the act of painting itself and the time spent with the paintings that I uncover their subjects.
These paintings subjects derive from notions of the everyday, split second chances and the brief little moments we have the pleasure of existing within.
