Beside the Seaside: An Exhibition of Coastal Works

Beside the Seaside: An Exhibition of Coastal Works

With “Port of the Year” Brixham just across the water, Torbay’s coastal Geopark status, the beautiful estuary town of Teignmouth, and our own front door a mere stones skim away from the beach, it is little wonder that we had no problem finding artists to take part in our Coastal Exhibition, “Beside the Seaside”. From Torbay, to Teignmouth, to Dartmouth, to Plymouth, our exhibitors will be bringing us art from all over the South West coastline for a display that will really capture the beautiful locality of the Gallery.

Seven artists join us for this one: Edward Lovesy’s beach scenes offer a light-hearted look at some of our seaside visitors and are sure to bring a smile to your face; Dave Crocker provides a wealth of experience of the South West Coast Path having spent a year painting along the trail in his 365 project (365 paintings in 12 months!); Sandra Lissenden puts her modern impressionist style to incredible use in her coastal works, with breath-taking explorations of the natural elements of the dramatic Devon coastline; Lee Pover’s mixed media sculptures capture the essence of the lively fishing community of Brixham and the historic Naval town of Dartmouth, with the addition of found objects discovered in beach combing completing her work; Sam Boughton’s MA in Children’s Book Illustration combined with an explorative mix of ink, watercolour and other mediums result in a whimsical collection of coastal scenes and images; based in Topsham, Willow Patterson’s detailed studies of coastal objects offer a close-up look at our beaches and coastlines; and finally Philip Eley’s Naïve style often produced on driftwood provides an authentic seaside style to his scenes.

Phil Eley and Dave Crocker will also be delivering talks for us on July 18th, with Phil discussing the Naïve art form and Dave telling us a bit more about his time on the coast path and the process of timelapsing his work. Tickets for the event (£4) can be bought in advance by contacting the Gallery.
