Two Devon filmmakers have made a feature documentary that is set for it's world premiere in Canada, at the second biggest film festival in the world.

The festival known as HotDocs begins at the end of April and play will host to a star-studded line-up which includes a Simon Pegg film about zombies and a film about Star Trek legend George Takei.

After pursuing a career in film, William Westaway teamed up with his old friend Matthew Alford, who also attended Torquay Boys Grammar, to make the documentary The Writer With No Hands. The 86 minute movie has been 4 years in the making and now the Devon duo expect to find a distributor at the festival who will see the film released in cinemas across the US.

"It's been a long and tough journey" said director William Westaway, "But being selected in such a prestigious film festival has made it all worthwhile."

The film follows Matthew Alford's investigation into the mysterious 1997 disappearance of Hollywood scriptwriter Gary Devore. His body was eventually found at the bottom of an aqueduct - minus both his hands.

"It's a real life murder mystery and for the last 4 years we've been putting together the pieces" said Matthew, who suspects a government cover-up. He added "The case is linked with the CIA so we've had to tread very carefully."

Gary Devore was writing a film about the CIA when he went missing and nobody ever found the script.

"Several people warned us to stop filming due to the nature of the case" said Matthew "So it was a very scary thing to do."

"There were a lot of very suspicious elements to the case that suggested the CIA assassinated Gary Devore" said William " We became very paranoid about everything, especially when we were filming in Los Angeles"

The film has it's world premiere on the 28th April in Toronto.
