Introduction to Stonemasonry - 2 day workshop

A two-day workshop on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 May 2016, at Castle Drogo, Drewsteignton EX6 6PB, 10-5 pm, £60/£50 (16 + yrs)

This workshop is a comprehensive introduction to the skills, techniques, tools and purposes of stonemasonry. Two experienced tutors, Trevor Clarke and Ben Martin, will work with participants to show them how to use and maintain tools, practice masonry and letter carving techniques as well as learning about the properties and uses of different types of stone. Participants will have the opportunity to work on a project of their own, carve an inscription or a 3D piece or both! All materials and tools will be provided. The tutors will give a short presentation on their own work.

Castle Drogo is undergoing a huge programme of restoration and masonry work to preserve the building. The course will include a tour of the interior and exterior of the castle, including the rooftop, in the company of the stonemasons currently working on the building.

This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners as well as those with some experience giving a practical overview of stonemasonry, also aiming to encourage young people to consider it as a career option, while also suitable for anyone wishing to gain or extend their experience of working with stone. The workshop is supported by The Worshipful Company of Stonemasons, National Trust, Dartmoor Arts and Devon Guild of Craftsmen.
