Gareth Ballyn / Events / Sun 3rd to Fri 29th Jun 2012 (4 weeks) Winner: highstreet neighbourhood
Winner: highstreet neighbourhood is a contemporary art project happening in the centre of Paignton. Artist Holly Smith and curator Gareth Ballyn have worked with several local organisations including Torbay Arts Development, ROC Creative and shopkeepers on Winner Street to develop this celebration of Winner Street. Winner: highstreet neighbourhood celebrates Winner Street through the launch of a shop, a map, a model, portraits, new art work and events!
The Winner: highstreet neighbourhood shop at 93, Winner Street opens 6.30pm on the 3rd June 2012 (during Jubilee weekend) and will exhibit art work made by Smith and also the groups they have worked with. By late May the artist made map of Winner Street will be available on line and also to take away at Paignton Library and other venues. Also showing at Paignton Library throughout June will be a scale model of Winner Street made by Curledge Street Primary school and portraits of shopkeepers on Winner Street done by the artists at ROC Creative
During June there will be a programme of events all based in and around No.93. These events are free and include exhibitions, artist talks and history tours. The programme of events published on the project blog now will be available at venues including Paignton Library, Palace Theatre and other venues around Paignton/Torbay.
Smith’s art works includes drawing, collage and film. She recently made art work based on market traders in the east end of London and also with farmers in the South Hams. She will be presenting her latest live work during the Jubilee Celebrations on Winner Street. Ballyn is an independent curator. He works with professional artists, makes multi media arts projects in school contexts and also curates and makes site specific work with artists. Smith and Ballyn say that they “have found Winner Street a vibrant neighbourhood to work in. It has many brilliant people, shops and stories that inspire us to make new work and events that will hopefully showcase Winner Street and also Paignton as an inspirational place for artists/arts workers to develop projects’
