The Eye of the Heart

The Eye of the Heart

Art, say the Chinese, should be ‘a fusion of the eye, the hand and the heart’.
For David Hamling, what is felt is every bit as important as what is seen, and so to see with the heart is what gives work its value and its meaning.

His new body of work is inspired by a life-long love of geology, with a focus on the weight, tension and the dynamics of form intrinsic to the landscapes of Dartmoor and the South Hams coast. The collection ranges from the photo-real to pure abstraction in an attempt to demonstrate the landscape in all its facets, and employs a wide range of processes and materials, often taken from the landscape itself: silver sand, granite dust, slate dust, carborundum, bronze powder. The exhibition also includes photography which has been manipulated to further enhance the concepts considered.

During a career in art education, including 20 years teaching on degree courses, David undertook a number of one-man shows and exhibited nationally and internationally. Now retired, he has returned to his native South Devon.
