Kate PaxmanKate Paxman Kate Paxman

Kate's latest work is a 3-screen film and audio installation in the Guardhouse Visitor Centre, Berry Head NNR, Brixham. Emerging from her research for the Smooth Space project 'over the horizon' the installation is focused on the Inner Quarry at Berry Head. This is an area kept gated and locked to give protection to the colony of Greater Horseshoe Bats which breed in its caves and also for safety - the quarry walls are unstable and there are frequent rockfalls.
Granted access to the Inner Quarry by Head Ranger Valda Smith she decided to film and record this magical but inaccessible site in order to share her experience of the newly emerging habitat she encountered there.
The Berry Head Visitor Centre has a dedicated 3-screen projection space, and Kate's work makes full use of this. She has pared down her content, allowing for a purely immersive experience of colour and sound from this strange and rich world.
Kate's evolving ideas can be viewed on the 'over the horizon' blog at:

Kate graduated from Central St Martins College of Art in 1996 and came to live in South Devon in 2004. She has a contemporary research-led art practise using digital media to create films, audio installations and photographic narratives. She has also worked on socially-engaged, community based participatory projects with people from many different cultures and backgrounds. Kate has recently set up Smooth Space a visual arts organisation for Torbay and the wider world with fellow artist David Harbott. 'over the horizon' is the first Smooth Space project and was run in partnership with the Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust and English Riviera Geopark. The project was supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
