Winter in Holne WoodsI am a Devon based artist living in the village of Holne on the edge of Dartmoor. I began painting seriously after a career in London as a biomedical research scientist and am self taught.
Becoming successful as an artist has been the realisation of a life-long passion. Living in Devon has given me the opportunity to work towards this aim and has enabled me to merge my love of art and nature. The Dartmoor landscape provides an endless source of images from which I draw much of my inspiration. I am particularly attracted to the less visited and wilder areas of the moor and especially to the fleeting mood and light changes that the unpredictable weather brings. I capture these transient changes on camera while walking on the Moor and back in the studio I develop my digital material to create a composition as my reference source and prelude to painting. If necessary, I know that I can return to the scene at a later date.
My other source of inspiration is the coastal areas of South Devon and those of Cornwall, particularly the Penwith Peninsula.
I also enjoy painting the more intimate aspects of the landscape, namely expanses of wild flowers, hedgerows and trees. My ‘flowerscapes’ have evolved to depict the colourful displays of flowers which arrive in the English countryside with the changing seasons. This enables me to combine my love of both art and the natural world.
I currently use acrylics for the body of my paintings but I supplement these with other materials such as oil pastels, pens, pencil and natural elements such as moorland grasses and sand. I often apply texture to the canvas as a prelude to painting. I work with palette knives rather than brushes and prefer a ‘hands on’ approach using fingers, rags, sponges, sticks and any implement which suits the purpose.
Although I am currently painting with acrylics I plan to return to oils for my next series of works. I intend to explore new avenues of expression which will enable my work to evolve and progress. A change of medium can provide a change of direction.
