The Dartington and Totnes Fun Palace

The Dartington and Totnes Fun Palace

10am - 4.00pm
There is no need to book - just turn up on the day!

On 4 & 5 October 2014 over 100 Fun Palaces will pop up across the UK and globally, celebrating theatre director Joan Littlewood’s centenary and her vision shared with architect Cedric Price. Fun Palaces is a campaign for culture that everyone can join – combining arts and sciences, welcoming and free, at the heart of our communities. As part of our Totnes and Dartington Fun Palace we are going to hold our first street band workshop. Street bands are one of the musical wonders of the world, the sound of celebration from Brazil to New Orleans, the Balkans to Delhi. Flourishing across the globe, these strong and rhythmic bands play for processions, outdoor dances, rituals, civic occasions and accompany outdoor theatre and circus. They are a great way for developing musical skills and an important part of many musical traditions, including our own. If you are aged 16+ bring your instrument and come along to the Methodist Church at 11am on the 4th for our first street band workshop, to be led by Tim Hill from Tongues of Fire. At 1pm KFC (KEVICC Folk Club) will perform and have an ‘open to all’ jam. At 4pm join us and Stephan Harding for a Totnes Time Walk and street band procession.

The Methodist Church Hall is available throughout the day as a venue for participatory activities and events open to families for play and exploration. Activities will be sensory and relate to the ‘Life of the Planet’ theme. Come and help build a Totnes of the future in clay or try bubble sculpting with the effect of wind. Everyone is welcome and invited to come along to this FREE event.
