Viewing Pleasure and Being a Showgirl Book Launch

Viewing Pleasure and Being a Showgirl Book Launch

Join us at Heritage Quay for the launch of Viewing Pleasure and Being a Showgirl: How Do I Look?

The book Viewing Pleasure and Being a Showgirl: How Do I Look? contextualises the contemporary showgirl experience, drawing out their relevance for feminist debate. Drawing on interviews with a breadth of different showgirls, from shows in Paris, Las Vegas, Berlin, and Los Angeles, as well as Contemporary Art Lecturer, Alison J. Carr's own artworks and those by other contemporary and historical artists, this book examines the experiences of showgirls and those who watch them, to challenge the narrowness of representations and discussions around what has been termed ‘sexualisation’ and ‘the gaze’.

This event is part of Inspired Huddersfield 2018 and will bring together artists and researchers who will respond to the book, helping to broaden the conceptual and critical location of the book.
