"The Chairs" and "The Lesson" by Eugene Ionesco

"The Chairs" and "The Lesson" by Eugene Ionesco

YOUNG SUSSEX THEATRE COMPANY TAKE ON THE ABSURD - Local performances prior to Camden Fringe festival :

The company that recently wowed Sussex audiences with Ibsen’s PEER GYNT in East Grinstead are back with two great plays from the Theatre of the Absurd, for two performances only at East Grinstead's Peredur Centre, in advance of a run at London ’s Etcetera Theatre.

Atelier, the professional core of the Atelier Community Theatre, presents two one-act plays by famed French-Romanian playwright Eugene Ionesco.

In THE CHAIRS, an elderly couple spend their final years half remembering stories, disagreeing about the past, and considering what might have been. This is their big night: they have a vital message to impart to the world before they take their leave... Classic Ionesco, this tragic farce is a masterpiece of black humour.

And in THE LESSON, behind an apparently benevolent pupil-teacher relationship, we find all the violence and domination, all the aggressiveness and possessiveness, inherent in any manifestation of power. Starkly funny, THE LESSON horrifies and delights.

Directed by award-winning Romanian director Vasile Nedelcu, with actors David Brett, Deborah Ellis, Alison Sandford and Corin Stuart.
