River Colne Art Project - Call for Public Participation

River Colne Art Project - Call for Public Participation

If you live near the River Colne, West Yorkshire, or are visiting Jo Kennedy is making a piece of collaborative art and would love for you to be involved. "As part of an artistic residency on the River Colne I've been walking down its course. I've seen schools of baby fish, grey wagtails bobbing on stones, statuesque herons poised motionless and waiting, and darting blue kingfishers...... but sadly also, plenty and plenty of litter and rubbish."

In response to this Jo has been taking pictures of the litter and other unwanted items she has seen in the river and would like others to do the same. The images will be collated into a one large collage (a 2020 River Colne Litter Survey re-framed as art!) for display at Dai Hall (ame's exhibition / concert space in central Huddersfield) this October.

If you'd like to take part all you need to do is email Jo (jokennedysound@gmail.com) with a photo of a piece of rubbish or litter you have seen in the River Colne, and the location you saw it. The river starts above Marsden and from here flows some 12 miles downstream through Marsden, Slaithwaite, Linthwaite, Milnsbridge, Huddersfield and Colnebridge to join the River Calder near Mirfield. Please send any photos by September 16th 2020 so there is time to collate them and print the collage. Provide your name too if you’d like to be listed as one of the contributors. A photo from your phone is fine, - as good a quality as possible, but please don’t put yourself in any danger whilst taking it, or if you decide you want to remove any of the litter!

The location you saw the litter in is important as the pictures will be arranged in order, from the top to bottom of the river. Jo says "It is an ever-changing situation - there is a constant topping up of new litter from people's excursions to the river bank, especially in fine weather, but all the time debris that does not become too stuck in the vegetation, or embedded in the sediment is being transported downstream, especially when river levels rise in the rain. A Lucozade bottle photographed above Slaithwaite in August could be photographed again by someone else in Colnebridge in September."
