Andrew Warburton wall hanging commission

Andrew Warburton was commissioned to create ‘Sculpting A Continent’ as a temporary installation for the Dewsbury Creative Town Arts Programme funded by Kirklees Council and produced by Beam, in partnership with the WOVEN in Kirklees Festival 2021.

Andrew Warburton and his hand tufting company Area Rugs & Carpets Ltd. designed this textile sculpture to draw attention to the increase of colossal icebergs, some the size of New York, breaking off from Antarctica in these ‘calving events’ as a result of climate change. His textile installation was displayed every Saturday throughout June 2021 in Dewsbury town centre and was intended to raise awareness about climate change and inspire people to make changes to lessen our impact on the environment.

Kirklees College has kindly agreed to give this textile sculpture a permanent home at the Pioneer Higher Skills Centre to showcase this locally made creative practice with locally sourced material from around the Heavy Woollen District of Dewsbury to stimulate conversations about climate issues.
