ART@THE HOUSE is the brain-child of local ceramics artist, Nigel Hoyle, whose aim was to bring together a collective of artists to show their work in the lovely surroundings of Cliffe House; celebrating its 70th anniversary, this Victorian mansion in 10 acres of woodlands and gardens is more used to hosting the groups of school children who have been visiting to take part in outdoor adventure breaks since 1948.

Having long been part of the local arts scene (and formerly an art teacher at Shelley High School), Nigel has brought together a group of artists, designers, craftspeople and musicians not only to display and demonstrate their work, but also with the idea of creating a relaxed and informal atmosphere where visitors can chat with them to learn about the materials, tools and techniques that they use.

And for anyone who’d like to have a go for themselves, there’s a programme of workshops throughout both days offering the chance to try out a totally new skill – from pot throwing to printing on clay, contemporary textile art, song writing, raku firing, and – not for the faint-hearted - Mongolian throat chanting!

For younger visitors, there will be children’s craft workshops and an Art Trail through the woods. Curious visitors will be intrigued by a surround sound/projection installation that will test their powers of observation, whilst a walk in the woods will reveal other ‘artistic interventions’ …

Nigel Hoyle explains:
“ART@THEHOUSE is the realisation of an idea that I’ve been mulling over for some time. I wanted to bring together an eclectic combination of artists and designers, musicians and makers to share and celebrate their creativity. And rather than Cliffe House simply providing a backdrop for the art, crafts and music, I wanted the beautiful buildings and landscapes to be an integral part of how they will be experienced and discovered. With over 20 artists, plus lots of hands-on activities, creative, unexpected installations and fantastic food and drink, I hope that we’ve created something new and different that will also be great fun.”
