Celebrating The Women In Kirklees Museums’ Displays

To mark International Women’s Day 2019, there will be events held at Bagshaw Museum in Batley and Tolson Museum in Huddersfield which will focus on the women who have helped create Kirklees Museums and look at how women’s lives are portrayed in the exhibitions.

On Saturday, 9 March, a ‘Female Connections’ talk at Bagshaw Museum in Wilton Park, Batley, will reveal how Victorian women – including a world famous author, a doctor’s wife with a passion for Egypt, a wealthy widow with a love of animals and an engineer’s daughter who travelled the globe – are connected through Kirklees museums and their collections.

This free illustrated talk starts at 2pm. Book on the day at the museum reception. For further information Bagshaw Museum, tel: 01924 324765.

Then on Sunday, 10 March, museum tours at 1pm and 2.30pm will look at objects on display in Huddersfield’s Tolson Museum which provide an insight, sometimes not obvious, into women’s lives. They will also consider how easy or difficult it is for museums to represent women’s history.

Places on the free tours should be booked in advance as places are limited. Contact Tolson Museum, Ravensknowle Park, Wakefield Road, tel: 01484 223240. Please note that the tours will include the first floor of the building, access to which is by stairs only.

International Women’s Day is a global day held on 8 March celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
