NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS FOR ARTISTS: The Importance of Planning
Julian Sutherland-Beatson in conversation with Judith Alder.
6-8pm.

Julian Sutherland-Beatson has had a long career as a freelance artist and graphic designer. Like many artists he has had to manage a career that juggles several roles, combining design work with a personal practice. Over the years Julian has developed successful strategies for managing his work, from working to briefs and deadlines for commercial clients, to identifying personal goals for making, exhibiting and selling his own paintings.

Based on Julian’s experience of developing a sustainable career as an artist, Julian and Judith will talk about how to set targets and goals and work towards achieving them, including organising yourself and your work, managing time and resources to achieve the results you aspire to. The conversation will cover general strategies that will apply to artists of all kinds and at all stages of their careers. Whether your ambition is to achieve a practice which is financially self-supporting, or you want to make work which is ambitious and progressive but may not make you money – the general principles for making and achieving your New Year resolutions are the same.

Julian will follow up this event in February with a full day workshop, New Year Resolutions for Artists: Developing a strategy for your future, aimed at helping you identify what success really means to you as an artist, appreciate your strengths and challenge your weaknesses, then develop a plan for accomplishment whilst increasing your ability to 'stick with it'. The full day workshop will take place on Saturday 21st February, 10.30am - 4.30pm at Towner and costs £59 for Blue Monkey Network members/£89 for non-members including materials, refreshments and snack lunch. During the day participants will cover personal management, pricing, presentation and marketing as well as working on a method of ensuring you create the best work you can. The workshop is for a maximum of 10 people and is suitable for artists at all levels of development, particularly those who wish to develop work to sell. It is also appropriate for those in other creative areas such as writing, performance, etc. To book, e-mail bluemonkeynet@btinternet.com
