Reluctant Readers - Help at Hand

Reluctant Readers - Help at Hand

HELPING YOUNG RELUCTANT READERS (Dyslexic, or otherwise)
In partnership with Kirklees Libraries

Do you know a young reluctant reader? Ever wondered why they don’t seem to love reading? Maybe they’ve been told that they are ‘dyslexic’ or have a ‘reading impairment.’ Maybe you’re beginning to think that this child ‘doesn’t DO books.’
Maybe you worry that they are a bit too dependant on screen time.
And perhaps you feel a bit stressed that they won’t achieve well at school – if they don’t enjoy books.
Worry no more. There are many ways for a child to get into books, or to simply to enjoy the power of stories; without having to read 100s of pages!
Whether you are a parent, carer, relative or close friend of a child or young person who you know is ‘a reluctant reader’ – this session is for you!
Come along and hear from Chris Longden her own experience of getting reluctant readers to fall in love with books. Find out:
- Why some people don’t seem to enjoy books
- Why children often don’t get the help needed to ‘get into’ books
- How to encourage someone who avoids reading
- Different approaches to introducing a love of stories
- What sort of books and other story-telling methods they might enjoy best; (when you CAN feel good about a helpful use of screen-time!)
- How the libraries can help you and your family
You will leave the session with;
- Tips on the best sort of books, stories etc. that might work and ideas that will make reading easier for people
- Your own strategy – a plan that we will help you to create that encourages you and yours to explore the most rewarding books, stories and other story-telling methods (film, audiobooks, graphic novels) Plus how to work better with schools.
- A feeling that you are working hard to help your reluctant reader; encouraging their literacy and an appreciation of terrific stories.
- More resources to look up and to explore
Important Notes:
- The session is suitable for parents/relatives/friends of anyone aged 8 years and above who is a ‘reluctant reader’ (for whatever reasons)
- Being a ‘reluctant reader’ doesn’t necessarily mean that someone has a reading impairment (such as dyslexia) or that they have low literacy. But ALL are welcome.
