Somerset & Wood is a fast-growing online fine art gallery specialising in affordable, original English art from the 19th and early 20th centuries, in particular works on paper in watercolour and graphite. The Role

We are looking for enthusiastic freelance researchers/writers to join our small team. The role will predominantly involve researching and writing sales listings for our website. The ideal candidate will be a confident and versatile writer, able to produce copy to a set brief. Please note that the role will involve working in-house at our offices in Holt near Bradford-on-Avon. Holt is a semi-rural location and own means of transport is essential.

Main duties

Researching works of art and artists

Identifying artwork age and style, and assessing relative value

Writing accurate and engaging sales copy for publication on our website

Condition reporting

Writing copy for weekly newsletter

Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential

Educated to degree level in Art History

Fluent in written and spoken English

Good, broad art-historical knowledge

Strong writing and research skills

Meticulous accuracy and attention to detail

Competence in basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, online research, data entry)

Conscientious and flexible approach

Ability to work well in a small team

Desirable

Knowledge of 19th/early 20th-century British art

Good British general knowledge

Experience of writing for web

Experience of writing sales and marketing copy

Commercial art experience
