The Social: Place Making

The Social: Place Making

Featuring Sophie Skellern, Project Manager & Artist – Found in Blackburn / Blackburn is Open

Sophie is a project manager for Blackburn is Open, a bold initiative connecting local artists and makers with the town centre.

Her latest project Found in Blackburn is a Heritage Lottery Funded project, exploring Blackburn’s fascinating past, and ideas for an exciting future, through a series of commissioned artworks.

Delving into the town’s empty buildings and hidden treasures, incorporating the memories of people, past and present, who inhabit these spaces; Found in Blackburn considers what the future of these buildings could be, and what local people want for the future of their town.

What is Place Making?

Place Making is a people-centered approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces. It involves looking at the physical characteristics of a place, and talking to the people who live and work there. It uses an asset based approach – that is, the local community’s resources, inspiration, and potential – to create public spaces that promote people’s health, happiness, and wellbeing.

What is The Social?

The Social is for people who are passionate about how the arts can help make a positive change for people and places.

We invite the people who are making the Creative Scene in North Kirklees to come together for a relaxed and informal evening of stimulating conversations; with guest speakers, creative activities, musical or spoken word entertainment and food from The West Riding Kitchen.
