The Social: Socially Engaged Practice

The Social: Socially Engaged Practice

6pm-8:30pm

Featuring Bo Olawoye & idle women

Bo Olawoye works as Community Engagement Producer for New Art Exchange – a gallery in Nottingham celebrating the rich cultural diversity of the region and beyond. Her approach to creative learning is to empower people through art to look at issues that affect their everyday lives. She has worked with young people, women’s groups, adults with mental health issues or disabilities and diverse communities. Projects have taken place in city centres, council estates, a fashion store, a library and a record store.

idle women is an organisation creating arts projects and places for women and girls; it is a growing network of connections, friendships and co-creation. This Spring/Summer, idle women are partnering with Creative Scene to bring an narrowboat-turned-artscentre to Mirfield for women in the area to take part in the arts.

What is Socially Engaged Practice?

Socially engaged practice describes art-making that is collaborative, often participatory and involves people as the medium or material of the work – it is with, for and about people. It can include any artform that involves people and communities in debate, collaboration or social interaction.

The participatory element is key, and the collaborative act is of as much importance as the art work that is created. Socially engaged practice can be associated with activism because it often deals with political issues. Artists who work within this field will often spend much time integrating into the specific community with which they are working.

What is The Social?

The Social is for people who are passionate about how the arts can help make a positive change for people and places.

We invite the people who are making the Creative Scene in North Kirklees to come together for a relaxed and informal evening of stimulating conversations; with guest speakers, creative activities, musical or spoken word entertainment and food from The West Riding Kitchen.
