Dance Artist Call Out | Reckless Sleepers 'Take a Seat'

Dance Artist Call Out | Reckless Sleepers 'Take a Seat'

Call out for dance artist residency with Reckless Sleepers May/June 2019
A collaboration between Reckless Sleepers, Dance in Devon and you?

We are head over heels with excitement that the incredible company Reckless Sleepers will be bringing their internationally acclaimed work A String Section to Torbay in June as part of (Extra)ordinary, 10 days of original work commissioned by Eyeview, Torbay’s Great Place Scheme Cultural Programme.

We have a unique opportunity for a specially convened company of SW artists to work with Reckless Sleepers to create a site-sensitive performance as part this exceptional programme. Take a Seat will be led by Mole Wetherell of Reckless Sleepers and offers professional dance artists from across the region, including those living and working in Torbay – a playful and collaborative opportunity to develop their practice. Exploring some of the conceptual approaches taken by Reckless Sleepers in creating their distinctive work, the selected artists will draw on their own choreographic practice to create this original performance.

Who are we looking for?
This opportunity is for dance artists who are keen to develop their practice through the lens of Reckless Sleepers’ approach to performance-making. You might be a choreographer-performer, actor or physical theatre artist, or other movement artist, but you should be up for challenging your process in new ways, working outdoors and in close proximity with members of the public. We are looking for a diversity of performance practices and a group of curious creatives. The opportunity is open but we will prioritise artists based in or with a strong connection to the South-West. The residency will invite you to bring your own choreographic practice into relationship with creative provocations from Reckless Sleepers. After the initial springboard weekend you will have the opportunity to involve your other collaborators/colleagues in this creation process if you choose. The performance event(s) on Saturday 15th May will take place around the Princess Gardens area of Torquay.

When?
This residency will take place in Torquay around Princess Gardens;
Springboard: Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May
Development: Thursday 13th, Friday 14th June
Public performances: Saturday 15th June matinee and evening.

We will offer the selected artists £500 towards the costs of taking part in the residency. This can be used towards travel/accommodation or fees.

Apply
Please apply by sending us on 1 page maximum;

• An outline of what inspires you about working with Reckless Sleepers on this project and why you are curious about considering your practice within a wider conceptual frame.

• A 1 paragraph biography which captures your approach to performance-making and gives us some examples of recent projects.

• A 1 minute video that gives us a window into your practice and will help us to discern what is distinctive about your work.

The deadline for applications is 4pm Tuesday 30th April 2019
Please send them to administrator@danceindevon.org.uk
