Talk: The Life and Times of a Doncaster Cyclist - Tom Simpson

Chris Sidwells will give a talk on the Life and Times of a Doncaster Cyclist - Tom Simpson at Doncaster Central Library, Meeting Room 1, DN1 3JE
on 1st May 2018 at 2.30pm

Tom Simpson is still considered by some to be Britain’s best ever road racing cyclist. He was the first British cyclist to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France, the first to win one of the five big races in cycling called ‘The Monuments, and the first to win the world professional road race title.

In 1965, he was even voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year, such was his fame. Although he was born in County Durham, Simpson grew up in Harworth just south of Doncaster and learned to race in the Doncaster area. Chris Sidwells will trace Simpson’s life, from his Yorkshire beginnings, through his move to live in France in pursuit of fame and fortune, his great successes and ultimately to his tragic death during the 1967 Tour de France.
