Sweet briar rose

Sweet briar rose

Rosa eglantaria (sweet briar rose) is a rose native to Europe, North Africa and Western Asia, which thrives especially in high altitudes. It is valued for its softly coloured single bloom (often light pink, here yellow), lovely scented foliage reminiscent of apples and its vibrant red rosehips, which can be found late into the winter. Indeed Rosa eglantaria is one of the best varieties of rose for rosehips. In many European countries rosehips are enjoyed as a healthful tea or used in syrups and jams.

This is one of several beautiful botanical drawings of roses by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759ꟷ1840).
