Blazing Flame Quintet

Blazing Flame Quintet

In 2017, Bristol’s iconic Old Vic Theatre became the showcase for Blazing Flame Quintet’s ‘Over The Brow Of The Green Hill’ – a jazz/improv song-cycle evoking Mark Chagall’s migration from Russia to Europe/USA in the 1930’s/40’s. It is one example of how BFQ play a new soundtrack for the current Zeitgeist. They centre on the songs of Steve Day, who Rigobert Dittman has called “an alchemical flame.” The whole band is a vital force, relevantly musical, visceral in delivery. Sax/bass-clarinet player, Mark Langford is an “underground legend....of a very high order”, partnered with Peter Evans’ “stunning” electric violin. They are powered by a double bass/drum team that ‘speak’ a subtle funk to the rhythm. On one level Blazing Flame Quintet slice jazz, go higher and there is dark theatre; at the core, BFQ are a great night out for the head, heart and body. Creative bespoke music, a highpoint evening guaranteed.

Gods, gardeners, painters, politicians, divas and film directors all play a part in these songs. Whether you’re a modern-jazz connoisseur or just interested in trying something different, listening, or better still seeing them perform live, is highly recommended. This year they have played prestigious venues such as The Vortex in London and Bristol Old Vic Theatre.
“... hugely impressive..... (the audience) really enjoyed the challenge of your music and performance...(and) came away raving about the band.” Geraldine Hill-Male, Chew Valley Arts Project (2017)

“I am repeatedly listening to the latest Blazing Flame CD – it is mindblowing. Previous albums by Steve Day were really good too, but the band have topped themselves with this one. The blending of the music, vocals, poetry really works. It is a joy to listen to from beginning to end. Suits my mood too! Like David Lynch and David Byrne hurled into the twilight zone. In an ideal world, such a project/record should be number one. I hope to catch them live someday…… Glad such records are being made. It is very pleasing and healthy on the mind and heart.” David Cristol, (The Jazz Magazine) 2017, France.
