evenfeed

evenfeed

even feed* …a sustained visual art and craft project.

What is the even feed project?
In the autumn of 2011 it will be 200 years since Isaac Singer was born. Singer is notable for his engineering developments which enabled sewing machines to be used in people’s homes. He made his home in Torbay at Oldway Mansion.
The even feed project marks the occasion of Singer’s birthday and also investigates the practise of making homemade clothes and in particular the use of the domestic sewing machine across different generational and social groups.

The project has been called even feed because on a sewing machine, the even feed foot is designed to feed the fabric through the machine without the fabric actually moving and prevents the problem of the under layer of fabric coming up short. This function could be seen to represent the way that the practise or memory of making clothes at home is useful, reassuring and constant.

When will it happen? and how you can be involved?
The project will start in early July 2011. If you decide to get involved you will be sent or given a package that contains several metres of white cotton fabric. You can then at home and in your own time, make an item of clothing that has some significance for you. It may be an item of clothing you remember someone wearing or, a favourite item you wore once but no longer have. When made the garment doesn’t have to be worn, in fact it could be made without a pattern.

On October 27th 2011 all the participants will meet at Oldway Mansion, for tea, cake and to put the finishing touches to their items of clothing. They will also have the opportunity to inscribe the garment with their memory or reason for choosing to make it. All the clothes will then all be exhibited for approx a month at a venue in Torbay tbc.

This project is a joint project between curator Gareth Ballyn and Torbay Council.
This project is free of charge for all participants!
