A Face in the Crowd: Local Personalities and their Stories

An exhibition of photographs and artefacts from the vast archives of the Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum.

The Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum opened in 1972 and is situated in the 17th century Old Grammar School towards the top of Fore Street. It is run as a community museum for the benefit of Kingsbridge and the South Hams, and the collections concentrate on the social history of the town and surrounding area.

As well as permanent and temporary exhibitions on site the museum comes into the community from time to time, bringing the collection to new audiences.

The exhibition at Harbour House focuses on the portraits and group photographs held in the museum’s vast collection, showcasing local people, groups and societies, with the opportunity to follow a particular person or family through time.

Caricatures published in the local paper in the 1970s, a selection of studio portraits over the years and a display of related artefacts will also feature.

The exhibition will include a section on the lives of local fisherman, with photographs, digital stories and a display created as part of a project with the South Devon and Channel Shellfishermen and Storylines.

With 2018 being the centenary of some women being able to vote for the first time, there will be a wall of women, with photographs and information celebrating local women.
