Sampson

Sampson

Low relief hand carved image of Sampson, coloured using red ocre and zinc white in a hot size. Indoors only unless under cover and regularly waxed. Sampson comes from the biblical story which stirred me as a child into feeling great sympathy for this man who was so badly treated (in my childs eyes). The idea came from the wood as the other side of the plank is rough and gnarled and looks very much like a crocodile. But the crocodile hunter didn't really do it for me so I chose Sampson instead. I like the idea of the metaphorical tearing down of authority when it stands for injustice, depicted in the carving by the Ionic capital
