Kate Cochrane

Kate Cochrane artist & designer

As a colourist painter I transform the visual into a mosaic of shapes and colour, considering tone, colour contrast and composition. I use a variety of subject matter: still-life, landscape, skeletons, people, sea and rocks. Currently I am working on ruined castles.

Glimpses of forest pools, streams, colourful inlets, and the play of water over rocks plus light and shade have motivated some of my paintings over the last few years. I enjoy the interplay of ground and fore ground; textures, shapes and spaces between elements, resulting in a rich tapestry of colour.

Now I am considering the history and legacy of castles in the landscape. Darkness of spirit, battles time out of mind, broken families and their legacy have left castles rendered apart and abandoned. A great wealth of material is waiting for me to use for my next major project of ruined castles. So I have started with Laugherne, Cessford and Brough, and now working up a pastel form Norham castle.
