Musical odyssey with the Orchestra of Opera North

The current Kirklees Concert Season goes out with some of the most famous bangs in musical history at Huddersfield Town Hall on Thursday 26 March, when the Orchestra of Opera North performs ‘The One From 2001: A Space Odyssey’: Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra.

If its pounding timpani and blazing trumpet fanfares aren’t immediately familiar from its German title, the odds are that you’ll know it from the unforgettable opening sequence of Stanley Kubrick’s classic 1968 sci-fi. Since then, its sense of anticipation and awesome power has been borrowed by everyone from Elvis Presley to legendary wrestler Ric Flair.

“Most people only know the famous opening bars of it, but here’s a rare opportunity to get to know the whole thing!” says Swedish conductor and Opera North favourite Tobias Ringborg, who returns to the Orchestra for the concert.

Two gems from Rachmaninov complete the programme.
