Laurence Elliott

Laurence Elliott paintings, drawings etc.

I'm an artist who draws, paints, makes prints when I can & make books of photocopied drawings & rants relevant to the body of paintings, songs etc. I'm working on. I try to make one a year. I've always felt that my work is a "vaguest assault" on specific powers & levels within people which like to ruin life for all, so I make new years resolutions which I apply to my practice, which is so far simplified & confused by 11 years worth. I think it helps me distill the ethos of what I'm getting at.

I've more recently become concerned with being understandable, which I try to debase by using the "understood" format of the portrait, which as a victim of attempted murder who had to view police dvd video id parades a year & a half after ultraviolence in total darkness, I know that this is nothing to do with identification. But yet we believe it to be. I suppose my practice is quite accusatory & I know that in greek, Satan is "the accuser", so it ticks this box in a hammy way & I'm also VERY BOTHERED by world issues, but am always trying to simplify. A lot of my work also deals with notions of psychic & chemical assault & defence.

I graduated in 2003 from Glasgow school of art, appeared in that years Bloomberg New Contemporaries & Frieze art fair & yearbook, as well as 'Inside Out (investigating drawing)', Milton Keynes Gallery, 'Happy Darkness', Galeria Andre Viana, Porto, Portugal, Berlinerkunstsalon several times, Tease art fair, Cologne, 'Belief in Flowers, meinblau, Berlin, appeared in 'Campbell's Soup' & curated 'Last chickens of sainsbury' at Glasgow international 2005. I used to be represented by kfa gallery, Berlin, but it died & my glasgow studio (THE CHATEAUX) burned down, the attempted murder compensation money dried up & now I find myself in Chichester in an on-going poverty trap. Thank God for finally having a legal studio, though...
