A Celebration Of Women in Theatre, Art, Music & History

A Celebration Of Women in Theatre, Art, Music & History

Brought To You By Lioness Theatre & Doncaster Heritage Festival

Lioness Theatre & Music will be taking over the Upper Room of Doncaster Brewery & Tap on Saturday 28th April. This special performance is a preview of a new piece of theatre written, composed, and directed by women. The evening also celebrates 100 years of local women activists and artists, and includes an exhibition of artwork, alongside local suffrage stories provided by Doncaster Archives. The artwork is provided by fine artist Helen Hardman, who is based in Doncaster, and will be producing several pieces inspired by the play. The exhibition begins at 7.30pm, followed by the performance at 8.15pm.

The show was written by Doncaster musician Hollie Morrell, a former Sine FM presenter, who has previously had her work performed at Cast. Inspired by the true story of Charles Goodyear, the inventor of vulcanised rubber, she and director Liz Kearney created this biographical play with songs which will be premiering in full this July at DN Festival. The piece uses theatre, art, humour, and song to tell the dark true story of how a bankrupt button-maker became one of the most important inventors of all time - and the terrible price he and his family paid for it. “The show is honestly quite eccentric,” says Morrell, “It centres around a scientific discovery, in tandem with quite a tragic human story. So we make sure to lighten the mood with the songs, and with lots of humour. We’ve even got Hamilton-style rapping!”

The April performance will be a pared-down version of the play, performed by the company’s new cast members: Alex Wilson, from Rotherham, and Andy Pilkington and Mo Louie, both from Manchester. Live musical accompaniment will be provided by Doncaster pianist Brian Morrell, who is an Associate Professor at Leeds College of Music. “We’ve performed at Doncaster Brewery & Tap before,” says Mancunian director Liz Kearney, “and Alison & Ian have always been so supportive of the arts. We can’t wait to go back”.

This special preview performance will be followed by a Q&A regarding women's journey over the past 100 years, and the role women play in the arts today.
