The Knight of the Burning Pestle

The Knight of the Burning Pestle

Thursday 23rd - Saturday 25th January, 7:30pm

A theatre company is attempting to perform a lovely romantic comedy called The London Merchant, about an apprentice in love with his master’s daughter, when they are interrupted by two audience members, a grocer and his wife. Unimpressed with the story, they demand their son Ralph be put in the play as a noble knight. Fearing for their safety, the players quickly invent a subplot for Ralph, who calls himself The Knight of the Burning Pestle, while they try desperately to perform the intended show. This delightful comedy from 1606 is one of the first plays ever written to turn theatrical convention on its head.
