Something From Nothing: Zen in the Arts - Workshop by Pasquale

Something From Nothing: Zen in the Arts - Workshop by Pasquale

Over the course of an evening and two afternoons, actor and Zen monk Pasquale Esposito will guide us on a journey of inquiry into the nature of sensations and perceptions. Working between Zen education and the craft of acting, Esposito's approach invites an exploration of mind and body, here and now.
The workshop will introduce the practices of sitting meditation (Zazen) and walking meditation (Kinhin) in the context of a creative process. We will explore the possibility that by doing nothing, we discover that something - which has always been present but of which we were unaware - becomes available. The workshop provides an opportunity to inquire into the nature of creative action and movement, and to explore the Zen provocation that “a real movement arises from an empty space”.

You are warmly invited to this research event, hosted by the Mindfulness and Performance Project at the University of Huddersfield (www.mindfulnessandperformance.co.uk). This event is free of charge but places are limited. To book, please email Deb Middleton on miltonboxoffice@hud.ac.uk.

Pasquale Esposito is a professional actor, working in both theatre and film, a researcher, and a Zen monk (in the Soto Zen tradition). He founded and is the artistic director of “Research Company Art and Awareness”. His acting and creative research has been profoundly influenced and guided by his Zen Buddhist practice. He has been practicing (Soto) Zen Buddhism since 1993 and was officially ordained in 2001 (Zaike Tokudo ceremony) and given his name Pasquale Shuten Esposito by the Abbot F. Taiten Guareschi at the Fudenji Zen Temple in Fidenza, Italy (www.fudenji.it). As an actor, he has studied under the guidance of Francesca De Sapio, Susan Strasberg, Susan Batson, Sandra and Greta Seacat, and Dominque De Fazio, of the Actors Studio New York. Dominique De Fazio substantially changed Pasquale’s artistic research; he studied and collaborated with De Fazio for many years, completed his 5 levels training system of work and taught acting at the Studio De Fazio in Italy, Germany and Los Angeles for 4 years.
