On Wednesday 22nd September, the Kirklees Year of Music 2023 pre-launch event took over the Lawrence Batley Theatre to celebrate the beginning of the build up to this celebratory year. Check out this short film that was made at the launch and hear what people had to say!
Attendees of the event were treated to live performances from local artists Dead Beat Brass and Hardeep Singh Sahota in the courtyard, before moving inside for welcome speeches from Qaisar Mahmood of Radio Sangam and keynote speaker Shain Shapiro, with musical interludes from the Huddersfield Community Gospel Choir.
Kath Wynne-Hague, Head of Culture & Tourism at Kirklees Council said: “It was great to see so many friendly faces at the launch event for Kirklees Year of Music 2023, with musicians from across the region, local councillors and members of the community who all came down to celebrate the diverse and rich music scene. We have lots of exciting projects in the pipeline, so keep your eyes peeled on our social channels and newly revamped website to make sure you don’t miss out.”
Special guests of the event include Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, who also took to the stage during the launch, and Cathy Graham OBE, Director of Music, British Council.
