Agatha Christie's Crooked House

Agatha Christie's Crooked House

The International Agatha Christie Festival Presents Crooked House, film screening introduced by Mark Aldridge.

This event is a rare opportunity to see Crooked House on the big screen, as this keenly anticipated film had only a limited cinema release in 2017. Crooked House boasts an exceptional cast including Glenn Close, Christina Hendricks, Terence Stamp, and Gillian Anderson, with director Gilles Paquet-Brenner working from a script co-written by Downton Abbey‘s Julian Fellowes. The production brings one of Christie’s own favourite novels to life in a film that remains faithful to the original book.

Crooked House is a treat for loyal Agatha Christie fans – but why did it take so long for the classic 1949 novel to make it to the screen, given its status as one of Agatha Christie’s very best mysteries? Previous attempts to adapt the story for television and cinema failed on at least three occasions, and the film spent two decades in limbo before finally being announced as a Neil Labute production in 2011, which would have starred Julie Andrews. However, by the time the film moved into production the director and cast had changed entirely. In his introduction to the screening Dr Mark Aldridge (author of Agatha Christie on Screen) will discuss the abandoned plans for the productions of Crooked House that never were – as he also tries to uncover the truth behind the book’s ‘curse’…
