Kaleido Hope

Kaleido Hope

'Kaleido Hope' consists of a large sphere suspended above the ground. It is covered with lots of small coloured skull images based on the Mexican ‘Day Of The Dead’. The size and placement of the imagery may make the subject matter not appear immediately obvious to the viewer. The sphere can be turned by a wheel handle. Viewers can look at the sphere through giant kaleidoscopes which view the skulls in an abstract manner, creating coloured optical effects. The piece attempts to examine the perception of life and death using humour and celebration. The sculpture plays with the notion of viewers seeing beauty in the representation of death.

The sculpture was made for the 2018 Cockington Court Sculpture Trail.
