Fashion Students Success With ‘ma Boutique, C’est Chic’

Fashion designers of the future unveiled their latest collections on Thursday 17 June at the Plymouth College of Art Further Education Fashion Show.

Members of the public were greeted to the show, ‘Ma Boutique, C’est Chic,’ by regal ushers dressed in white and gold, beneath the grand pillars of Devonport Guildhall.

Local models were put through their paces in hair and make-up before stepping out, many for the first time, wearing pieces from the final projects of National Diploma Fashion and Textiles students.

Past, present and future, flora, fauna and space were all played out as piece after piece, towered down the runway on skyscraper heels, greeted by rapturous applause.

In a dramatic finish, Jerry Moore’s collection ‘Aria’ was inspired by opera from 18th century France. The bold statements, dramatic colours and luxurious fabrics and his huge hooped dress closed the show.
He said: “My work is about romance and passion as well as despair and desperation, like the Opera.

“Today was another step in my career and it’s such a pleasure to work on a live show and see the pieces worn to perfection by stunning models.”

‘Beautiful Botanicals’ was another collection by Naomi Northmore from Plymouth. She said: “My pieces were inspired by Liberty of London, and I used drawings of plants and flowers that were originally drawn by children.

“You have to be very committed and determined to do this course, but once the music and lights were on and we could hear people clapping, we knew the audience was enjoying the show and liked what they saw.

“We wouldn’t have been able to do it without our tutors and the sponsors who all helped us and the models to put on a show to rival those in the industry.”

Julia Stean, Course Leader for Fashion said: “It was outstanding! The students made every effort to put together a show full of energy and drama, and they worked incredibly hard as a team. I never cease to be amazed at the high level of commitment students demonstrate to develop highly professional and creative work.

The diversity of this year’s work was very impressive, and like last year, many of our students are tipped to go on to have fantastic careers in fashion. We would like to thank them all for their hard work and inspiration, and wish them all the best for the future.”
