New Plymouth City Gallery Opens this Week

New Plymouth City Gallery Opens this Week

As Plymouth College of Art is being unwrapped from the outside, inside what is described as ‘Plymouth’s best kept secret’, the exhibition team is working around-the-clock for the grand opening of the first exhibition in the city’s newest gallery space, simply called ‘Gallery’.

‘Material Actions’, the Gallery’s first exhibition opens to the public this Wednesday 8 September at 5pm, and runs until 23 October. The exhibition is inspired by ideas that were explored in a Textile Forum South West conference last year which discussed the ethical and sustainable use of materials.

Hannah Jones, Gallery Curator said: “Everyone will have seen a glimpse of the work going on through the window as the scaffolding has come down and the contractors have handed us back the Gallery.”

“We are now ready to open this brand new bespoke gallery space in time for the new term, in conjunction with the new look for the College, and in a perfect location for everyone to enjoy, right in the heart of the City.”

“This exhibition showcases the most exciting local and national emerging artists. For those who missed it, there will be a second chance to see the work of Mrs Smith, the textile artist whose recent graffiti ‘hit’ on Plymouth Sundial appeared suddenly overnight and caused much enjoyment and lively debate, and documentation of the event will feature in the Gallery.”

Material Actions is an exhibition inspired by the ideas that were explored in the South West’s conference, Textile Footprint in 2009. The conference discussed the ethical investments in the practice of textiles.

A new publication titled ‘Material Actions’ has been published by Plymouth College of Art to coincide with the exhibition and features a specially commissioned essay by Dr Kate Fletcher (author of Sustainable Fashion and Textiles).

A one day seminar with a chance to meet four of the artists featured will take place on Saturday 16 October. This is free and takes place in the College’s Studio Theatre from 9.30am until 3.30pm. For more information and to register email exhibitions@plymouthart.ac.uk

The new Gallery is open from 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, and Saturday 10am to 12pm on Saturdays.
