South Devon College’s First Artist in Residence

South Devon College’s First Artist in Residence

ABSTRACT ARTIST Reece Whitehead - who recently had a solo exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art Yerevan in Yerevan, Armenia – has been working on new pieces at South Devon College whilst also mentoring art students.

Reece, born in Brixham, originally studied art at South Devon College before taking a degree in Fine Art at London’s Kingston University and exhibiting his pices in the OSO Arts Centre in London. His old tutor art tutor at South Devon College, Pawel Szymanski, has stayed in contact and was happy to offer the College’s Paignton-based facilities as a base for him to work on new material from, knowing what a great learning opportunity it would bring his current students.

“I’ve got a lot to owe Pav, he helped me stay at University and focus on my work, and that’s why I’ve stayed in contact,” said Mr Whithead, “I’ve enjoyed working with students – I’ve got a lot of things to tell them that I hope they find useful.”

Reece has travelled the world since finishing his studies, working in his own studios from South Korea to Seattle in the USA, and is planning on visiting, India, China, and Vietnam next year. Next month he is returning to Armenia for a second exhibition at the National Cinema as part of the British Arts Council. Before that, however, he will be exhibiting his paintings -including new work made especially for South Devon College – in the gallery at the College’s University Centre in Paington, from 30 January to 10 February. There is also a private viewing in the main Street area of the College’s Vantage Point campus at 3pm on Friday 27 January.
