The Paper Cooperative Workshops

Workshops run 11am–1pm.
Children under 8 must be assisted by an adult.
£5 per child, adults free when accompanying a child.

9 Aug
Monster Mash Up
Ages up to 8, must be accompanied by an adult. Older siblings welcome.

Transform our stock of lovely papers into a crowd of horrible monsters! In this workshop each participant will design and make a crazy creature to take home. Led by artist Michelle Moss.

10 Aug
Paper Play
Ages up to 8, must be accompanied by an adult. Older siblings welcome.

Have fun with Eleanor Duckworth, snipping, ripping and gluing to your hearts content. There will be plenty of opportunity to be inventive – how about coming up with your own design for a colourful paper decoration? Or try your hand at making an LED tea-light lantern to decorate your bedroom.

Flower Boxes
Ages 8+

‘The Paper Florist’, Katherine Thomas, will show you how to craft a simple card keepsake box decorated with handmade paper flowers. Fill with something special and you’ve got a perfect handmade present for a lucky person!

12 Aug
Zines
Ages 8+

Make a mini magazine all about the things that matter to you! You’ll get several copies of your magazine to give to your friends and one copy will go on display in the gallery. Led by artist David Chatton Barker.

13 August
Paper Animation
Ages 7+

Contribute to an animated film and bring paper to life with Anna and Claire of Clannamation.

16 August
Costume Making
Ages up to 5, must be accompanied by and adult. Older siblings welcome.

In this workshop, led by artist Michelle Moss, little people and their adults will have lots of fun playing with paper to make a mask, costume or disguise. Be sure to bring your camera!

17 August
Paper Jungle
Ages 8+

Build a paper jungle, complete with paper parrots and wild animals, then watch it come alive with the use of some clever lighting. Participants will take home their own animal puppet and a piece of the jungle. Led by artist Jenny Mellings.

18 August
Message Kites
Ages 8+ with accompanying adult

Make a unique kite with artist and printmaker Catherine Cartwright. First you will print messages and patterns onto lightweight paper, then transform your designs into a small kite.

19 August
Paper Panarama
Ages 8+

Work with artist Jenny Mellings to create a fantastic 3d picture using wonderful speciality papers.

20 August
Paper Animation
Ages 7+

Contribute to an animated film and bring paper to life with Anna and Claire of Clannamation.

23 August
Paper Making
Ages 8+ with accompanying adult

Take some waste paper pulp, add some special ingredients, and produce your own sheets of handmade paper! When its dry, we’ll pop it in the post and you’ll be able to create something special at home with your paper. Artist and teacher Eleanor Duckworth leads this workshop.

Paper Crowns, Tiaras & Hats
Ages 5+ (Under 8s must be accompanied by and adult)

Create a unique piece of party headwear with Rivka Jacobs. Rivka absolutely loves hats, so much so that she gave up her job to become a couture milliner (someone who makes really special hats). Come and share her enthusiasm and become a couture milliner for a few hours!

Pop Out Cards
Ages 8+

In this workshop you’ll get to design and produce your own pop out animal card. Led by paper engineer and author of countless pop-up books Ruth Wickings.

26 August
Old Books into Art
Ages 8+

We have a stock of old books that are beyond repair and we’d like you to create something wonderful from them. Look at some examples of artists who create artwork from old books and then set about tinkering to create our own mini exhibition. Led by artist David Chatton Barker.

27 August
Paper Animation
Ages 7+ (under 8’s must be accompanied by and adult)

31 August
Scissors & Paper Rock!
6-9pm, ages 16+

Spend an evening at Spacex with a stock of covetable paper and likeminded paper-crafters. Workshop leaders include milliner Rivka Jacobs and Nathan Blaker of No Guts No Glory.

These workshops are part of The Paper Cooperative, a family friendly exhibition that offers the opportunity to explore the use of paper. With free self-guided activities, daily workshops, interactive sculptures, artists books and a cafe, there are ways for visitors of all ages to explore, make and experiment with paper. The workshop programme is supported by Paperchase.
