THE BEEHIVE AWARDED ‘COMMUNITY CENTRE OF THE YEAR’

THE BEEHIVE AWARDED ‘COMMUNITY CENTRE OF THE YEAR’

The first Devon Community Honours took place last week, to thank some of Devon’s most selfless individuals for their efforts to make the county a better place to live. Among them was The Beehive in Honiton, honoured as ‘Community Centre of the Year’. The award recognises community groups and organisations running a community centre with the help of local residents who volunteer their time.

Honiton Community Complex Charity, the team running The Beehive which includes over 100 volunteers and staff, aims to create a vibrant and stimulating centre that engages, challenges, entertains, supports, educates and encompasses the whole community.

Since opening in 2014, The Beehive has welcomed over 59,000 people to the building each year. The building is used by over 80 community organisations and special interest groups.

Five representatives from The Beehive attended the award ceremony at Exeter Castle which was organised by DevonLive, in association with Devon County Council. The afternoon began with a welcome reception in the Terrace Rooms, followed by afternoon tea in the Ballroom. Judi Spiers hosted the event and introduced all of the successful nominees.

Barry Simmonds, Chairman said “Winning a ‘Community Centre of the Year’ award is an amazing accolade. It’s fantastic that everyone who gives up their time to volunteer at The Beehive has been recognised for their hard work. I’m proud of what we have achieved as a community.”

The community centre award sponsor Western Power Distribution said “Community Centres, like our business, operate at the heart of its community. They often provide a safe haven for people who seek the company of others in a shared activity or event. They bring together people who make up the diverse nature of the local community to have fun, share experiences and support others. We are delighted to support the amazing people who make these community centres such a valuable resource for the wider community.”
