The Heaviside Condition is a quirky song-cycle based upon the life and times of one Oliver Heaviside FRS (1850-1925); a deeply eccentric engineer and mathematician whose work helped revolutionise communication technology at the dawn of the 20th century. He was the penniless pioneer of the Victorian Internet; a self-taught maverick whose application of maths led to the transmission of human voices across the Atlantic Ocean. His legacy is writ large in today's shrinking world of instantaneous messaging and wireless transmission, yet his character has remained obscure to most.

This mashup of eclectic original music, live theatre and film tells an original and surprising story about Oliver Heaviside. Taking his retirement in South Devon as a jumping-off point, The Heaviside Condition explores avenues of madness, love, loneliness, acceptance, numbers, letters, human rituals and animal encounters.

The piece will introduce, for the first time on a public stage, The Choral Engineers; a new creative community choir of all ages. The Choral Engineers have been clapping, laughing, playing mechanical instruments, creating new songs outdoors and exploring their animal spirits as part of the research for The Heaviside Condition, all in addition to singing their hearts out. The performances will also feature the two director/composers Hugh Nankivell and Steve Sowden (aka The Shared Inventions) on keyboards and guitars, plus musician Dean Brodrick (bassoon and percussion) and actor/singer Jon Croose – as Oliver Heaviside.

The Heaviside Condition is the opening show of this spring's Doorstep Theatre touring partnership
