ST THOMAS STORIES – AN ARTIST CALL OUT

THE PROJECT

Emmanuel Hall, the beautiful old church hall, where we’ve been making our work for over 30 years, is coming up to its centenary. With our next project we aim to celebrate our neighbourhood, St Thomas in Exeter. Led possibly by its tendency to flood, the area has often been labelled as the “wrong side of the river”, but this has given it a real vibrancy. The Seven Stars in St Thomas was the first theatre in town. The fairground was here, the wrestling and the speedway. It was also the part of the city that took in most of the evacuated children during the war, and where the black GIs were stationed in makeshift tents whilst the white GIs were put up in homes north of the river. Our Emmanuel Hall has been central to the stories in the area, it has hosted dances and meetings and shows and youth clubs.

From the 5th-12th October, we’ll be putting on a pop-up exhibition about St Thomas at Emmanuel Hall and we’ll also be gathering stories and objects from the local community. And in May 2020, we’ll be transforming Emmanuel Hall and creating a performance/installation, inspired by the stories we’ve heard and the things we’ve found out. It’s for this performance/installation that we’re looking to commission artists.

WHO CAN APPLY?

We’re interested to commission artists who would be excited to create work in response to Emmanuel Hall itself and the stories of St Thomas. The work will form part of the performance/installation, which takes place in May 2020. You should be Devon-based (or live within a radius of 60 miles from Exeter). Experience in theatre is NOT a requirement. We’re especially keen to meet artists with a visual focus to their work; designers, film–makers, sculptors, photographers, painters, digital artists etc. We’d also really like to meet those who work with sound or music or movement; sound designers, composers, choreographers etc. In fact, in terms of the medium in which you work, there’s very little that’s out of bounds, although at this stage, we’re not looking for performers (that’ll come later!) or writers.
