A special event at Tolson Museum, Huddersfield, on Saturday 2 June explores its new exhibition ‘Our Fight for the Voting Right!’
Guest speaker will be historian and author Jill Liddington, who will tell the stories of the local area’s remarkable fight for the vote, in particular the story of Florence Lockwood’s dramatic conversion to the ‘Votes for Women’ movement and the creation of her iconic suffragist banner, which takes pride of place in the exhibition.
She will also talk about Kirklees’ other daring suffragettes, including 16 year old weaver Dora Thewlis who was arrested and imprisoned after taking part in a march on Westminster.
Frances Stonehouse, exhibition curator, will talk about the fascinating stories that didn’t make it into the displays. She hopes members of the public can add to the special occasion:
“The story of suffrage in Huddersfield is very strong. Kirklees Museums and Galleries would like to add to its collection and knowledge to truly reflect the area’s incredible women in this historic national movement. It would be great to hear about people’s own objects or stories from the women’s suffrage movement in the Kirklees area at this event” commented Frances who can be contacted by phone on 01484 221000 or email frances.stonehouse@kirklees.gov.uk
A Q&A session with Jill Liddington will follow the talks.
The event starts at 2pm and costs £5 per person. The cost includes refreshments. Places must be booked in advance by contacting Tolson Museum, Ravensknowle Park, Wakefield Road. Tel: 01484 223240.

‘Our Fight for the Voting Right!’ celebrates local women who were part of the movements which fought for and won the right to vote. It has been created to mark the centenary of the 1918 Act that gave women over 30 the right to vote. The exhibition will run through to 2019 and is accessible by stairs only. ‘Our Fight for the Voting Right!’ is supported by Arts Council England’s Museum Resilience funded Sustainable Collections project.

Tolson Museum opening times:
