Holman Hunt on display at Torre Abbey

Our Collections Spotlight shares some of the highlights from Torre Abbey's stunning collections. The Children’s Holiday by William Holman Hunt is on permanent display in Torre Abbey.

In 2012, this significant painting formed one of the centrepieces of the Tate's exhibition on the Pre-Raphaelites, touring to London, Washington and Moscow. at the centre of Torre Abbey's art collection is to be loaned to the Tate Gallery and will travel the world.

The painting, dated 1864, shows Mrs Fairbairn as a matriarch of Victorian society surrounded by her children enjoying a lavish picnic.

William Holman Hunt (1827–1910) was famous in the Victorian art world for co-founding the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1849. Complex compositions with attention to detail and rich colours are characteristic of the Pre-Raphaelite painters, and Hunt went to great lengths to ensure that his works embodied the movement’s motto ‘Truth to Nature’.
