Wearable Art 2010 Wearable Art Show 2010 Teignmouth

Wearable Art – Carlton Theatre - November 15th 2010
The Carlton Theatre was virtually full to capacity for the second TRAIL Wearable Art show, a further development of the popular summer , environmental, Sculpture Trail .
The briefing for artists said “TRAIL wants to be surprised and expects the unexpected” and certainly the entries did just that with the artists given the opportunity of collaborating with local musicians and technicians from the Carlton to make this another colourful, extravaganza performance celebrating all of the elements that make magical theatre.
The audience were spell bound throughout by the quality of the catwalk entries and the creative use of many materials that are normally thrown away.
The performance section gave the teams the opportunity to use recycled / reused material to present a short item of their choice; Gorgi Gilpin and her daughter Camille decided to highlight the fact that 12.5 tonnes of tents are left behind at Glastonbury festival each year by making dresses out of tent material, ROC group for Adults with Learning difficulties from Paignton highlighted the future with characters representing Ice, the Sea and Hope while the TYKES produced two pieces looking at the effects of pollution and rubbish on the world.
The catwalk was ablaze with colourful, imaginative costumes, even four entries made by Russian children were brought into the country especially for the show. Old curtains became magnificent robes, willow a tribal fantasy of colour, papier mache, sculptural costumes reminiscent of Japanese warriors. Used wine bottle foils became leaves and pewter tankards were reused as dress decorations.
The judges were hard put to make decisions as the standard was so high. Finally the results were announced with Liz Lockyear deservedly winning the catwalk category with ‘Willow Queen’, a colourful tribal costume crafted from willow reeds and various materials enhanced by an exciting performance by Anna Baumgart exotically body painted by Saskia. The Teignmouth Players Tykes won the performance category with ‘A New Day’ directed by Leigh Tony and using spectacular costumes and music to highlight the damage that pollutants cause.
The Goodie Bags (Annie Good, Stephanie Green and Vivien Goodwin-Darke) added wit and song to the evening as they compered the show, providing entertainment in their own inimitable style. Music was by popular local performer Billy Bottle.
An excellent evening left the audience wanting more and several of the artists already planning next year’s costumes.
TRAIL will be back next summer with the annual sculpture trail and, hopefully, another Wearable Art competition but like many other organisations they are in need of additional finance to make it all possible. Anyone willing to help in this respect and keep what is an excellent tourist attraction going is asked to contact TRAIL at   trailartuk@googlemail.com  or ring 010626 775885
TRAIL was delighted with the support from the Teignmouth Players, the Carlton Theatre and TAAG (Teignmouth Arts Action Group) in helping to make event a success. This event was helped by the resources available at the new Art Centre in Northumberland Place where anyone is welcome to come along and discuss new ideas for events.
More images can be found on the TAAG website at www.teignmoutharts.org and shortly as video on U-tube searched under Wearable Art, Teignmouth.
TRAIL is an unique mix of professional artist and artist led community groups, an event that is continuously evolving with 2010 seeing performance, literary and visual arts coming together exploring environmental issues. It was founded 6 years ago by Liz Lockyear and has continued to grow over that period to become an important tourist attraction as well as a source to promote environmental messages
