Organ & Live-Looping Workshop: Machine Prayer (Electric Spring)

Organ & Live-Looping Workshop: Machine Prayer (Electric Spring)

Join Pam Hulme to try some live looping with organ as part of Electric Spring 2020!

About this Event

'The essential nature of the organ as a synthesizer layering sound upon sound is controlled by an alchemy very similar to that which generates electronic music.' Michael Bonaventure

Although there are many timbral and organisational similarities between pipe organ and electronic music, combining the two is a relatively new development.

Digitally augmenting the organ in live performance through adding effects and live looping the sound can be very challenging but pushes the boundaries of possibility for this incredible instrument.

After a short presentation on Pam Hulme’s work with organ and live looping, and an introduction to the technology and the Phipps Hall organ, participants will have an opportunity to experiment themselves. Together we will explore Pam’s semi-improvised composition, Machine Prayer, and work towards a collaborative performance. No prior experience is necessary, and you can choose to attend the workshop either as an active participant or passive observer.

Pam Hulme is a composer, organist and conductor based in Berlin and Yorkshire. Her work extends the possibilities of acoustic instruments using aspects of electronic and urban music. Pam often works with organ and live-electronics, both as a loop artist and composer of fixed electro-acoustic works, remixing classical organ repertoire, and exploring the surface of sound itself.

Alongside her work as an organist, Pam is Choral Director of Pfingstkirche, Berlin, and is an Associate of Yorkshire Sound Women Network (YSWN). After studying Music (BA) and then Musicology (MA) at the University of Bristol, Pam worked for over a decade as a Head of Music in East London, whose vibrancy and cultural diversity continue to inspire her.

Pam is currently a postgraduate composition researcher at the University of Huddersfield, focussing on exploring musical surface in works for organ and electronics.
