Trainee opportunity: Studio Assistant, Greenmount Studios

Yorkshire Sound Women Network (YSWN) seeks to provide better opportunities specifically for women within the music industry, and is working with music and sound industry employers to challenge and change the gender gap.

YSWN has teamed up with Greenmount Studios (Leeds) to offer a paid Studio Assistant trainee opportunity. This is a positive action paid trainee opportunity aimed at women and non-binary people aged 18-25 years old. Applicants must be resident in Kirklees.

Duration: 16 days (7.5 hours per day), worked flexibly in agreement with the Studio between September – 30 November 2019.

Bursary: £2,000 inclusive of travel expenses

Greenmount Studios is an independent recording studio set up and run by musicians, based in the basement of converted church in Armley, Leeds. Greenmount Studios aim to make the process of creating a record as natural, creative and as fun as possible. They believe in capturing the atmosphere of musicians playing together. They mix with the same ethos using a hybrid approach of both analogue and digital. Their studio practice includes the use of the tape machine and the outboard alongside the console and the computer to get the best of both worlds; utilising the classic analogue sound and combing that with all the advantages of the modern editing and automation possibilities.

The trainee will get real-world experience of working in a busy recording studio, with tasks including:

• Assisting with recording projects
• Studio maintenance
• Liaising with clients
• Office administration

As part of the placement, the trainee will also receive mentoring support from a member of studio staff.

Skills / Experience / Attributes

• Interest in / knowledge of studio recording techniques, including ability to use one digital audio workstation (such as Logic Pro X, Reaper, Ableton, Pro Tools)
• Some experience of sound recording either in a domestic, studio or other setting
• Willingness to learn
• Team player
• Good verbal and written communication skills
