The recording of time with clocks is only a mechanical convention which we have grown up with and accept, but it is only one theory of time in one plane, there are several other theories.
Einstein's theory of time and space states that the speed of light is the only constant physical property of the Universe and other physical properties must be different for people travelling in different directions and speeds.
Ouspensky's theory of time "revolving circles" explains the feeling that sometimes occurs of "I have been here before" although physically you know that you have not in the present life.
J.B.Priestly wrote several plays based on theories of time, and in one the concept that we are each of us a series of observers in a corresponding series of times. As Observer One in Time One we can be said to die - but subsequent Observers are immortal, this is why in dreams the future is often revealed - because we then function as Observer Two in a different time phase.
All very confusing!
Hugh Leonard's play "Time Was" at the Little Theatre is based on the theory that it is our consciousness of the present that moves, time itself stands still, the past is still there. So many people are longing for bygone days that time has ruptured, people who cannot cope with the present are disappearing into the past, people remembered from the past are popping up in the present!
It's all very Irish, very funny, entertaining and thought provoking.
