Over the Hill and Far Away

Over the Hill and Far Away

An exhibition contrasting Rosemary Bonney's paintings of the Devon countryside and coastline with Pamela Parrotte's love of travel and exotic colour.

The Dartmoor landscape provides an endless source of imagery for Rosemary.
"I am particularly attracted to the less visited and wilder areas of the moor, and especially to the fleeting mood and light changes that the unpredictable weather brings."
It's important in Rosemary's working practice that she can return to a site to gather more information for a painting, and she is occasionally tempted just a little further afield to the coastal areas of south Devon and Cornwall, and in particular the Penwith Peninsula.

"I also enjoy painting the more intimate aspects of the landscape, namely expanses of wild flowers, hedgerows and trees. My flowerscapes have evolved to depict the colourful displays of flowers which arrive in the English countryside with the changing seasons. This enables me to combine my love of both art and the natural world."

"I currently use acrylics for the body of my paintings but I supplement these with other materials such as oil pastels, pens, pencil and natural elements such as moorland grasses and sand. I often apply texture to the canvas as a prelude to painting. I work with palette knives rather than brushes and prefer a ‘hands on’ approach using fingers, rags, sponges, sticks and any implement which suits the purpose. Although I am currently painting with acrylics I plan to return to oils for my next series of works. I intend to explore new avenues of expression which will enable my work to evolve and progress. A change of medium can provide a change of direction."

Rosemary has exhibited widely in Devon since 2006.

Pamela responds to colour and light, and her varied body of paintings is inspired by her travels: glaciers in Alaska hang alongside richly coloured Turkish bazaar scenes and the warm terracotta of Roman apartments. Patterns and reflections catch her eye, and a love of chiaroscuro effects leads her to paint interiors and architectural scenes.

Pamela generally prefers to work in acrylic, oil or charcoal, particularly for the human form, and also makes use of pastel and gouache.

Pamela has exhibited in Devon and Somerset, and her work has been selected for the Royal West of England Exhibition, Bristol.
